January started off strong... and warm. We had 80deg days, followed by some very cool nights. This had the bass freaking out, a bit. Should we run out to the deep? Should we go shallow? How about we just stay tight to this cover and not move? Well, it seems some fish did each of these. The ones that went out deep were much easier to find, and catch. Alabama-Rig, counted down to about 8-10ft. Slow-wind, reel-rip, reel-rip, slow wind. BAM! And the Jerkbait Plus1 did some damage too. Again... right about the 8ft zone. They come up from deeper water and smash it. Then, came the FREEZE. WOW! What a winter storm. This rivaled the Snowmageddon of 2021. I'd like to say that I went out and smashed the big girls during the late Jan, early, Feb, time. Yeah, that's when they are the fattest. But, no. With 4 inches of ice everywhere, I just parked the boat and covered it. But, you can bet, the first opportunity I get to re-launch, I'll be running the deep-diver over the roadbeds. Slow-rolling the A-rig. Jerking the jerk. And, let's not forget. Chop-reeling the big SPRO KGB Shad glide-bait. I've decided that this year will be the year I stick to that larger glide and go for the bigger bite. Wish me luck!!
In the end, I didn't get the full January experience, this year. I was fully expecting to stay out there as often as possible for the chance at the big'un. No worries. I'll hit it Feb. That is, unless we continue this single-digit cold freeze thing. Nope!
If you feel like taking a shot at the big girls, we should be ready for a good pre-spawn gorge-fest. The lake has seen very little pressure, of late, due to the cold. Could be a good set-up for the Feb/March bite. Jus' Sayin'
